PAST - The company in the 20th Century
Empresa Figueirense de Pesca Lda has its origin in the city of Figueira da Foz, Portugal, with Sociedade de Pesca Oceano Lda (SPOL), established in 1912 for the codfish fishing in the North Atlantic Waters. Its 90 meter long fishing vessels traveled to Canada and Greenland in the search for cod, which was processed on board and conserved in salt. Each fishing campaign at the sea took about 5 months. When arrived to Portugal the cod was dried in the sun and then sold, along with the Cod Liver Oil (also processed on board). The fishing fleet grew through the whole 20th century, reaching other market segments such as both fresh and frozen fish and shrimp, in the Portuguese, African and Canadian sea waters. In 1977 the company invested in a fishmeal and fish oil unit, also in the city of Figueira da Foz, supplying protein for the chicken, cow, pig and aquaculture industry.
PRESENT - The company in the 21st Century
Between 1999 and 2005 the fishing operations were substantially reduced and are now concentrated on trawling, catching high quality fresh fish from Portuguese waters. It represents 17% of the Company’s sales. The company premises, once home for a huge cod processing and drying plant, were converted in Logistics facilities in the year 2000, with the company acting as a Logistics Service Provider (warehouses, freezing facilities, etc). The fishmeal and fish oil business grew 250% between the years 1999 and 2004, and the factory was fully refitted and modernized in 2005 by Alfa Laval, Denmark. In the search for extra added value, in 2010 the company invested in the expansion of its industrial facilities, adding technology for fish oil processing. It started producing fine and pure Squalene and Squalane, Shark Liver oil (Alkylglicerols) and Cod Liver oil, along with refining its own EPA and DHA fish oils.
In 2012 the Company celebrated its 100 Years, with its fish oils being widely used in the whole world, in segments such as Cosmetics, Nutraceuticals, Pharma and Fine Chemicals.
Empresa Figueirense de Pesca continued its quest for innovation/ expansion and in 2013 it acquired the former Lake Oil strategic assets (Lake Oil was one of the main squalane producers in the world).
Thanks to this investment, the Company diversified its product range in 2014, entering the vegetable origin products segment (olive squalene, olive squalane, grape seed oil, chlorella vulgaris, etc) and creating the EFPBiotek brand (www.efp.pt).
The Company entered 2015 as the Squalene and Squalane European Leading Manufacturer, launching its own Health Boost Consumer Products line (nutritional supplements and cosmetics).
Taking advantage of its know how, geographic location and high quality portuguese sea and vegetable products range, the Company plans to expand its product range to Vegetable Butters. Liquid Emolients, Natural alternatives to Petrolatums and Lanolin, Complexes and Emulsifiers, Olive Origin Policosanol / Phytosterols, Colagen, Hialuronic acid, Peptides and other high quality products.
